O Viet Thanh Nguyen γεννήθηκε τον Μάρτιο του 1971 στο Βιετνάμ. Μεγάλωσε και ζει στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, όπου διδάσκει στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Νότιας Καλιφόρνιας. Έχει δημοσιεύσει διηγήματα, και επίσης δύο πονήματα σχετικά με τις πολιτισμικές συνέπειες του Πολέμου του Βιετνάμ: "Race and Resistance: Literature and Politics in Asian America", το 2002 (Oxford University Press) και "Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and The Memory of War", το 2016 (Harvard University Press).
