Ο καθηγητής Φρανκ Τσέλνερ αφιέρωσε τη διδακτορική του διατριβή στη θεωρία της τέχνης και της αρχιτεκτονικής (1987) και τη διατριβή του επί υφηγεσία στον Λεονάρντο ντα Βίντσι (1996). Έχει δημοσιεύσει πάμπολλα δοκίμια για την τέχνη και τη θεωρία της τέχνης της Αναγέννησης, καθώς και για τον Πάουλ Κλέε. Από το 1996 είναι καθηγητής στο πανεπιστήμιο της Λειψίας, όπου διδάσκει αναγεννησιακή και μοντέρνα τέχνη. Με το έργο του "Λεονάρντο ντα Βίντσι", που απευθύνεται και στο ευρύ αναγνωστικό κοινό και στους ειδικούς, θέτει πολύ ψηλά τον πήχη για την έκδοση βιβλίων σχετικών με την τέχνη. Το 2003 το βιβλίο τιμήθηκε με το Βραβείο Πωλ Μαρμοτόν της παρισινής Ακαδημίας των Καλών Τεχνών.
