Ο Ντον ΝτεΛίλλο, από τους σημαντικότερους σύγχρονους συγγραφείς παγκοσμίως, γεννήθηκε το 1936 στο Μπρονξ της Νέας Υόρκης. Έχει εκδώσει συνολικά δεκαέξι μυθιστορήματα και έναν τόμο με διηγήματα. Εξέδωσε το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα, με τίτλο "Americana", το 1971 και έγινε γνωστός στο ευρύ κοινό με το μυθιστόρημα "Λευκός θόρυβος" που τιμήθηκε το 1985 με το αμερικανικό National Book Award.
Τα έργα του έχουν τιμηθεί με πολυάριθμα βραβεία. Το "Ζυγός" βραβεύτηκε το 1989 με το Irish Times International Fiction Prize, το "Μάο ΙΙ" το 1992 με το PEN/Faulkner Award και ο "Υπόγειος κόσμος" απέσπασε το 2000 το William Dean Howells Medal της Αμερικανικής Ακαδημίας Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών που απονέμεται κάθε πέντε χρόνια στο κορυφαίο μυθιστόρημα της πενταετίας.
