Γεννημένος το 1948, ο Francis Latreille ξεκινά την καριέρα του το 1967 ως ρεπόρτερ. Παίρνει μέρος στη δημιουργία των περιοδικών Best και Cheval και αργότερα εργάζεται στη France-Soir, την οποία εγκαταλείπει το1995, για να οργώσει, με συντροφιά τον Jean-Louis Etienne, τη γη των πόλων, την Αρκτική και την Ανταρκτική. Κερδίζει το βραβείο WorldPress Photo και συμμετέχει στην έκθεση Mammuthus στη Σιβηρία (ένα απολιθωμένο μαμούθ ξεθάβεται από τους πάγους μετά από 20.000 χρόνια!). Τα ρεπορτάζ του γίνονται πρωτοσέλιδα σε περιοδικά, όπως το Geo, Paris, Match, Life, Time.... Είναι ο συγγραφέας του "Mammouth" (εκδόσεις Robert Laffont, 2000) και "Mission banquise", μαζί με τον Jean-Louis Etienne (εκδόσεις Seuil, 2002). Επίσης εξέθεσε φωτογραφίες του στο Musee national de la Marine το 1997 και το 2006 και στο Palais de la Decouverte το 2000. Το 2004 και 2005 παίρνει μέρος στην αποστολή του ιστιοφόρου "Tara" στις ακτές της Γροιλανδίας και της Ανταρκτικής.
