Ο John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, Άγγλος φιλόλογος και συγγραφέας, γεννήθηκε στο Bloemfontein της Νότιας Αφρικής στις 3 Ιανουαρίου 1892 και πέθανε στην Αγγλία στις 2 Σεπτεμβρίου 1973. Το 1916 παντρεύτηκε την Edith Bratt, με την οποία απέκτησε τρεις γιους και μία κόρη. Ο Tolkien ήταν φιλόλογος και ανάμεσα στις ακαδημαϊκές θέσεις του συμπεριλαμβάνονται αυτές του Έκτακτου Καθηγητή της Αγγλικής Γλώσσας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Leeds, του Καθηγητή Αγγλοσαξονικών στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης και του Καθηγητή της Αγγλικής Γλώσσας και Λογοτεχνίας στο ίδιο πανεπιστήμιο. Το συγγραφικό έργο του ξεκινά ήδη το 1911, όμως το πρώτο του σημαντικό έργο για τη μυθολογία της Μέσης Γης, "The Hobbit, or, there and back again", ολοκληρώνεται το 1936 και δημοσιεύεται το 1937. Τα επόμενα χρόνια βλέπει τα έργα του να εκδίδονται σε διάφορες γλώσσες και να λαμβάνουν πολλές τιμητικές διακρίσεις. Πεθαίνει το Σεπτέμβριο του 1973.
