The pursuit of happiness : An ikarian story
zoom in

In 2008, Manos, a young Greek college student studying in America, invites Conrad, an American friend, to his native island of Ikaria for a two week summer vacation. Between panegyria and swimming, he is introduced to Ikarian life, romance, and to Manos` wonderful grandmother Toula who tells them the amazing story of her mother`s life and their family`s adventures during the Depression in America and wartime Ikaria. The book focuses on Despina, Manos` great grandmother, who was born in Ikaria in 1902, lived in America between 1920 and 1933, and then returned to the island with her seven children to escape the Depression. Her life in Ikaria in the 30s, her daring escape when it was occupied during the war, and her fight to keep her family intact in a bewildering series of refugee camps in the Middle East and Africa make fascinating reading. Despina`s story is a very Ikarian story, full of vignettes of life on this wonderful island. It is a story of courage, survival, and fortitude, told with humour and insight.
