Συγγραφέας αναρίθμητων έργων, οφείλει τη φήμη του στο Ιστορίες και διηγήματα από τα Περασμένα, που δημοσιεύτηκε με το όνομα του γιου του. Είναι μια συλλογή διηγημάτων με ομοιοκαταληξία, καθώς και πεζά κείμενα που δημιουργήθηκαν με την ελπίδα να ψυχαγωγήσουν τα παιδιά αλλά και να κατακτήσουν το ευρωπαϊκό κοινό. Τα πιο γνωστά παραμύθια, ίσως και τα πιο όμορφα, όπως η Σταχτοπούτα και η Ωραία Κοιμωμένη, έχουν μελοποιηθεί από συνθέτες όπως ο Ροσίνι και ο Όφενμπαχ.
