Ο Όσκαρ Φίνγκαλ Ο΄ Φλάερτυ Ουίλς Ουάιλντ γεννήθηκε στο Δουβλίνο το 1854. Σπούδασε στο Trinity College του Δουβλίνου, κι αμέσως έπειτα στην Οξφόρδη. Η πρώτη του ποιητική συλλογή κυκλοφόρησε το 1881, κι αργότερα, μετά το γάμο του με την Κόνστανς Λόυντ (1884), δημοσίευσε μια σειρά από παιδικά παραμύθια. "Το πορτρέτο του Ντόριαν Γκρέη" είδε το φως της δημοσιότητας το 1891, αλλά η πρώτη μεγάλη επιτυχία για τον Ουάιλντ έμελλε να προέλθει από το θέατρο, με τη "Βεντάλια της Λαίδης Γουίντερμηρ" (1892). Ακολούθησαν άλλα τρία θεατρικά έργα: "Μια γυναίκα χωρίς σημασία", "Ο ιδανικός σύζυγος" και "Η σημασία του να είσαι τίμιος", ενώ το τέταρτο, "Η Σαλώμη", απαγορεύτηκε στην Αγγλία και δημοσιεύτηκε στη Γαλλία το 1893. Το 1895 καταδικάστηκε σε δύο χρόνια καταναγκαστικά έργα με την κατηγορία της ομοφυλοφιλίας. Από τη θητεία του στη φυλακή γεννήθηκαν τα δύο αριστουργήματά του, "Η μπαλάντα της φυλακής του Ρήντιγκ" και το "De Profundis". Μετά την αποφυλάκισή του το 1897, εγκαταστάθηκε οριστικά στο Παρίσι, ως το θάνατό του το 1900.
