Η Γιούσρα Μαρντίνι γεννήθηκε το 1998 στη Δαμασκό της Συρίας. Από πολύ μικρή ασχολήθηκε με την κολύμβηση με όνειρο να εκπροσωπήσει τη χώρα της στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες. Αναγκάστηκε να εγκαταλείψει την πατρίδα της όταν το πατρικό της καταστράφηκε στον πόλεμο.
Είναι πρέσβειρα καλής θέλησης της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ για τους πρόσφυγες (http://www.unhcr.org/yusra-mardini.html). Το περιοδικό People την επέλεξε ως μια από τις είκοσι πέντε γυναίκες που αλλάζουν τον κόσμο, ενώ το περιοδικό Time το 2016 τη συμπεριέλαβε στους τριάντα έφηβους με τη μεγαλύτερη επιρροή.
