In August 2004 Athens hosts the Olympic Games for a second time. The Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece, in its endeavour to keep alive historical memory and to publicize the significance of the first modern Olympiad, decided to mark this event by publishing the volume ``Athens in the Late Nineteenth Century. The First International Olympic Games``. This is a collective work, which sketches the political, social, artistic and intellectual life of the Greek capital, national centre of Hellenism, with its superb Neoclassical architecture and its significant archaeological monuments integrated in its cityscape. The book discusses the background to the revival of the Olympic Games, in Greece and abroad, describes and documents their successful organization in Athens in 1896, as well as the coverage of them in the contemporary Athenian Press.
