Rembetika, the music which began in the jails and hashish-dens of Greek towns and became the popular bouzouki music of the 30΄s, 40΄s and 50΄s, has many parellels with American blues. Like the blues, the rembetika songs were the soul music of a group of people who felt themselves to be outside the mainstream of society , who developed their own slang and their own forms of expression. "Road to rembetika" is the first book in English to attempt a general survey of the world of the "rembets", who smoked hashish while they played the bouzouki and danced the passionate "zembekiko" to release their emotions. It is an enthusiastic introduction to the subject, written by an Australian musician who first came to Greece in 1965 and has been interested in Greek music ever since. Gail Holst describes her own initiation into rembetika, outlines its historical and sociological background, its musical characteristics and instrumentation. The second part of the book is a collection of rembetika songs translated into English. The text is illustrated with photographs of the period, musical examples and original manuscripts of the songs.
Η Gail Holst-Warhaft γεννήθηκε στην Αυστραλία και φοίτησε στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Μελβούρνης. Τη δεκαετία του ΄70 επισκέφθηκε στην Ελλάδα και εργάστηκε ως μουσικός και δημοσιογράφος. Το 1990 υποστήριξε τη διδακτορικής της διατριβή στη Συγκριτική Λογοτεχνία, στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κορνέλ στην Αμερική (θέμα διατριβής: "Dangerous Voices: Women΄s Laments and Greek Literature", Routledge 1992). Σήμερα είναι αναπληρώτρια καθηγήτρια Κλασικών Σπουδών, Συγκριτικής Λογοτεχνίας και Μεσανατολικών Σπουδών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κορνέλ, όπου από το 2004 διευθύνει την "Πρωτοβουλία Μεσογειακών Σπουδών" (Mediterranean Studies Initiative) και συμμετέχει στο Cornell Center for a Sustainable Future. Τα πεδία ενδιαφέροντός της παραμένουν η ελληνική λογοτεχνία και μουσική, η ελληνική λογοτεχνία από την αρχαιότητα ως σήμερα, η μετάφραση και οι πολιτισμικές σπουδές. Παράλληλα, είναι μουσικός (έχοντας παίξει μαζί με τον Μίκη Θεοδωράκη, τον Διονύση Σαββόπουλο και τη Μαρίζα Κωχ), μεταφράστρια ελληνικής λογοτεχνίας προς τα αγγλικά (του συνόλου των ποιημάτων του Νίκου Καββαδία, της "Αρραβωνιαστικιάς του Αχιλλέα" της Άλκης Ζέη, του "Μαουτχάουζεν" του Ιάκωβου Καμπανέλλη, κ.ά.), καθώς και ποιήτρια. Έχει δημοσιεύσει πολλά άρθρα για θέματα νεοελληνικής ποίησης και μουσικής. Στα βιβλία της περιλαμβάνονται: "Road to Rembetika" (1975), "Theodorakis: Myth and Politics in Modern Greek Music" (1980), "The Cue for Passion: Grief and its Political Uses" (2000), "Penelope΄s Confession" (ποίηση, 2007), "Losing Paradise: the Water Crisis in the Mediterranean" (επιμέλεια, 2010), "The Classical Moment" (επιμέλεια), κ.ά.
